We have made decent progress in several areas during the last 60 years. We have produced world-class scientists, engineers, journalists, soldiers, bureaucrats, politicians and doctors. We have built complex bridges and dams. We have sent satellites and rockets into space. We have increased the number of doctors tenfold. We have increased life expectancy from 32 years to 65 years. We have built about 1.25 million miles of new roads; we have multiplied our steel production by over 50 times and cement production by almost 20 times. We have increased our exports from a few million dollars at the time of independence to more than $125 billion now, with about $150 billion of imports Green Revolution Perhaps, no other Indian initiative has enhanced the national confidence as the Green Revolution initiated by Dr. M.S. Swaminathan. This revolution, which started in 1965, not only transformed India into a food-surplus economy from a food-deficit economy but also triggered the expansion of the rural, non-farm economy. The lives of at least 400 million to 500 million Indians have been uplifted due to this initiative. From being a perennial importer of grains, India became a net exporter of food grains 10 years ago.

One dubious distinction was conferred on India recently. Sify carried a WHO report that more than 1.2 billion people in the world do not have adequate toilet facilities; they are forced to defecate out in the open. India, for your kind information, has 625 million who do it out in the open. Given these basic requirements, you would think the government of this upright, honest, intellectual, eminent economist and a man of integrity, would have turned his attention to more fundamental needs of his countrymen, instead of desperately seeking to sell India to a cartel of nuclear technology suppliers.

What nonsense. There is no question of surviving .... in business if you produce a product needed by another, you survive. In this case, India is producing the product needed by USA and UK. It is mutual requirement and benefit. So, you are being mean when you say Indian IT industry depends on USA or UK.

i agree with rajesh, pls look at the common man how many under bpl, social security, medicines, medical facilities,electrification of villages, roads, where is basic infrastructure? narayan murthy will talk as per scientific progress, pls read the preamble, v are a democratic secular socialist republic. what has happened to comman man? cities like new mumbai going 5 hrs without power, pls donot even think abt rural areas, no power for more than 12 to 15 hrs. u call this progress? look at the esis schemes, ar ethey beneficial? no medicines available you think this is progress. by launching a satelite what good has it done when u cannot predict natural disasters, law and order in capital itself is bad what about states like up/bihar. 60yrs of independence has only increased the gap between rich n poor and divided the country more on sectorial and caste basis by acknowledging that economic backwardness is not the bench mark but the birth of a person is determining the reservation to education/jobs. well the list is long. am sure alot of my friends will contribute on this board of the progress of the nation. pls dont count billionaires but chk percapita income.pls dont compare with bhutan/pakistan/indonesiaafghanistan. the bench mark has to be higher, take japan/china even russia. u will realise what v hv achieved in 60 yrs, buying selling of mps to retain power.
