NA Deal
by Redhish on Jul 21, 2008 02:08 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

Imported uranium and nuclear reactors will be cheap and cost-effective.

Even if the nuclear deal is made operational, the actual sale of uranium and nuclear reactors will be governed by market forces – there are no guarantees of cheap or competitive nuclear power . To the contrary, there is every reason to believe that it will be expensive. The cost of uranium in the international market has gone up four-fold in the last few years, and will rise further with further demand. The same is true of the cost of steel and other materials used in a reactor. Manpower costs are much higher in the West. The example of the Dhabol power plant has already shown us that importing power plants from the West is not necessarily a viable option. We would do well to learn from that experience.

In India we have a problem of not looking too far. Our country makes plan only for 5 years, not more than that. And if some visionary tries to do that, then he is criticized and condemned. If you look at PM's plan of energy security, it looks for all possible renewable energy sources. Nuclear energy is not for cenetr stage. But when we come close to being developed nation, every watt of energy will be counted. That 'll be time when Carbon fuels 'll be going to moribund. He is looking for country's future. He is putting his crdibility at risk by taking a risk that is part of his vision. He deserves all the accolades. He is not the weakest PMs ever. He is one of the boldest PM and FM ever. He has a vision. He had a vision in 1991, and we can see fruits of that. And all these parties opposed him in 1991. And they are doing the same thing now.
And don't forget same Left and BJP opposed when Rajiv Gandhi brought computers in India. These narrow minded parties had no knowledge then and situation is same now.

First of all Nuclear deal is not your PMs brainchild. It was started under Vajpayee's NDA govt.So like shortlived memory of indian masses, dont make up your mind about your PM.
Secondly to get himself in glory he has not negotiated well with US and it seems congress is getting greatest ever kickbacks in going for this deal!Congress is known for this and still digesting Boforse money!
Decision taken in 1991 was not FMs..it was an international pressure to open up vast market India was shiledling from MNCs.You were made to open up the economy! It was bound to happen.
Whatever growth rates MM has been showing is not his wisdom ,just due to the fact that economy was opened up!His real role would have been taking growth rates to grassroot level, into agriculture sector and rural india!on this front he has failed completely. It will again be market forces and pressure from economy to grow vast indian market living beyond A & B class cities which will bring next level of growth in India!
