The Speaker issue
by Gauranga Bhattacharya on Jul 17, 2008 03:31 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

The speaker should not resign for two reasons especially :
a) It is a Constitutional chair and never a Political chair. Hence, if he now resigns on the ground that the CPM has withdrawn support, it would clearly established that the Speaker had, so long, PERFORMED HIS DUTIES at the "guidance" of his Party. That will be a contempt to the Constitution;
b) The CPM, prior to withdraw support, could have asked Mr.Somnath Chatterji to resign from the Speaker's Chair for 'personal reasons'. The Parliament could have elected a new one (non CPM). This could have saved the Speaker's Chair from any controversy. But the CPM did not do this for obvious reasons.
Sri Chatterji, a Lawyer, is very much right to his stand. No one can or should abuse Constitution or be allowed to do so.

you are absolutely right ,speaker is above party and CPM is playing politics of oppurtunism.In the past someone denied permission to JYOTI BASU to become PM and today the same people are trying their level best to impose thier archaic ideology on SOMNATH CHATTERJI who is such a revered person and an upright man.Somenath ji should remain as speaker .
