Morally speaking Somnath should quit
by mallaiah anchoori on Jul 12, 2008 11:05 PM   Permalink

Yes,Somnath Chaterjee needs to step down from speakership on moral grounds since his left party withdrew its support to the UPA govt which only installed him in that seat.Congress preferred to choose him as speaker only to keep the left in good humour at least this way since they did not want to be a part of the govt and a party to all its decisions-good or bad. There is nothing wrong even if the left asks him formally to step down. His continuing in the seat despite his party's withdrawal of its support to the govt only would be like ones treating the serpent as enemy, but treating its tail as relative on a plea that, after all,the tail does not contain any venom.
A speaker's post is above the barriers of a party and one sitting in that cannot be treated to be belonging to a particular party.Hence it is not at all proper for the left to include his name in the list of party's members withdrawing the support as long as he continues to be the speaker.
Jtothi Basu is a seasoned politician who decries cheapness in politics though one may stoutly differ with others ideologically. In all probability,he may not be inclined to pressurise Chatterjee to quit the prestigious position, but may like to leave the decision to the latter's individual discretion.there is a lot of change Jyothi Basu too who started accepting realities as could be evidenced from his very agreeing that socialism cannnot work in India.Enough is that to say that he does not favour pulling the carpet by the left.
