why is US pushing
by IITMViper on Jul 06, 2008 02:24 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

if the deal is so favourable to us, why the heck is the USA foisting the deal on our heads. why does every tom,d1ck and harry from the US come at our doorstep every week to put pressure on the hapless manmohan and his coterie. Doesn't that raise eyebrows to even those who don't understand the fine print in the n-deal ?
This deal sure means a lot more to the yankees and bush in particular.

I knew that you were not IIT material .... you just proved it.

The deal will benefit the US corporations who will provide India with technology and fuel. India will be buying that stuff and pay for it in US$. The US companies get revenue, USA has a big balance of trade deficit, so it helps the balance in their favopr a little and India gets a cheaper source of energy. It works to everyone's benefit.

except of course BJP's and commies' who are opposed to the deal for political reasons.

The subject of debate has changed from the N-deal to 'political horse trading'. Disgusting indeed. The Congress which delivered freedom for India is trying to take it back and give it to somebody else. Posterity will not pardon them.

The deal is the outcome of the 2005 declaration. It permits US to change their laws, not India regarding this deal.

Our present installed capacity is 128182 MW. Share of nuclear power is 3900 MW. (3%). We plan to add 6,800 MW (Nuclear power) in 10 years. This is about 3% of the targeted capacity of 200000 MW in ten years. It will take 10 years to build and commission a nuclear project if all goes well which seldom happen in India. Unit cost for Nuclear Power is around rupees ten crores per MW in 2007. By a lapse of 10 years, unit price of power will be around Rs 20/- per unit. (Assumption) taking into account the cost escalations due to inflations etc. There will be all sorts of impediments from 'special interests' foreign and Indian in the smooth completion of projects. We have to approach several agencies and establishments (Foreign) for supply of many parts of the plant and to get certified. In that case we will be forced to go for TURN-KEY projects. That is disastrous to our economy. Intrusion by foreign powers into our Thorium plants/research institutions is another subject which needs attentions. According to the many reports and articles there are provisions in the Hyde act for the US to peep into all our installations.

The frequent trip by US delegates to pressurise MMS and party to sign the deal is intriguing.
McCain promised 100 nuclear plants in US. It is to make India feel that they are going to build more plants. May be, they are about to demolish old plants and dump them in India as second hand equipment. By this way they can solve the problem of disposal of radioactive equipment. Most of the nuclear plants in US are old enough to discard. Nuclear waste can not be disposed in the US as their rules are are very stringent.

US seeking help from us !! sounds strange.
coz in this world, only the weak seeks help from the strong. the strong will force its way on the weak.
This deal only serves the uncle sam's purpose of curbing our nuke weapons by prohibiting our testing them in the future. It is only dangling a carrot in the garb of a special n-deal which is nothing but a sugar-coated version of CTBT.
