A thorium based power plant is already in opeation at Kalpakkam (world's only one). As per Kakkokar's own admission we have enough resources for setting up 10000 MWe Nuclear Power plants but the present installed capacity is onl 2740 MWe (all the plants of NPCIL put together).
We are now in the second stage of nuclear power production (Pressurized heavy water). The US has a vested interest in preventing us from developing the next stage (Thorium based plants).
The present deal with US will only help the equipment manufacturers from US and politicians/bureaucrats who can earn kick-backs, as we do not even manufacture Stand-by Diesel Generating Sets meant for Nuclear Power Plant (Conforming to IEEE-382 Spec). The cost of dismantling a Nuclear Power Plant is more than the cost of setting up a Plant. Many plants whose life has expired has still not dismantled in Europe due the exhorbitant cost involved. And of course there is always a possiblity of accidents like that of Chernobyl.

Abdul Kalam has earlier emphasized on using Thorium based power plants, but none of the Politicians heard him at that time. Now SP is harping to get some Importance in UPA. To get a share of the loot!***The present deal with US will only help the equipment manufacturers from US and politicians/bureaucrats who can earn kick-backs, as we do not even manufacture Stand-by Diesel Generating Sets meant for Nuclear Power Plant (Conforming to IEEE-382 Spec).*** This point to be noted by all who are asking to go for a deal with US. India will become MORE POOR if they depend on US. Instead of standing on their OWN feet & MAKING sincere effort to combat power issue. Regards!

I ENDORSE YOUR VIEW, ALSO THESE THORIUM Based plants can generate Uranium which can be further used for other Uranium based Nuclear plants. Regards

"The present deal with US will only help the equipment manufacturers from US and politicians/bureaucrats who can earn kick-backs, as we do not even manufacture Stand-by Diesel Generating Sets meant for Nuclear Power Plant (Conforming to IEEE-382 Spec)." There are many such issues which are not known to public & being hidden by UPA Govt.IT IS BETTER THAT WE SHOULD STAND ON OUR OWN FEET & TAKE SINCERE MEASURES TO COMBAT POWER ISSUES.
