I think something to do with western ghats. But western ghats cover only konkan region of maharashtra.

mostly tribals live on the ghats. So it becomes derogatory that way.

literal meaning is ppl residing on ghats...but used as slang to refer maharashtrians...same as lungi for south indians, gujjargand for gujratis, bangladeshi for bengali etc

VERY Accurate argument. Shiv sena leaders come to Tamasha dances in various places. Shiv sena supported ladies bars in Mumbai. Ghattis are no better than gujjus. Just that they smell a little bit less.
