Don't hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus
by Sanjay Singh on Feb 29, 2008 03:32 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

Why is the central government who always claims to be a secular party is planning to resume work on the sethu samudram project when they also know that the project is not going to be a beneficial one and would prove to be a costly white elephant for with the tax payers will cough up their hard owned money.

Time and again its been proved that its a man made structure and not a natural formation. The geologists, the surveyors, the experienced mariners and the nature conservators have protested against the destruction of the sethu and all have proven their stance.

The central government is trying to create communal tension and they know very well about the outcome of their decision. The religious sentiments of any religion should not be hurt or tarnished and then only we can call ourselves a truely secular nation.

I think now we should approach the United nations to intervene in this matter and request the world to raise their voice against such a drastic decision of the Indian central government.

Dear Mr. Sanjay,
Please dont think that way man. Its a good project for our country our See ports will get a big boost because of this project. Kochin and Bombay port will have better load factor. This will bring foreign currency and will boost the exports of our country. Now this is enjoyed by the colombo see port.

Dear Mohammed,

I too am a well qualified and well experienced mariner and from the mariners point of view I would tell that the sethu samudram project is not beneficial at all for the development of the country. The gulf of mannar is a very shallow depth area and also very heavy current area. One needs lot of continuous dredging and maintenance to maintain the depth of the channel and such maintenance is not possible in open sea area. You cannot compare sethu samudram channel to Suez canal or panama canal or Kiev canal. All those channels are land based channels. At sethu samudram the depth won't be very much and at present the worldwide shpis are of higher tonnage which requires deep draft for sailing. Such big ships still ply via Colombo port but none of those ships would be able to sail through sethu samudram because of the depth restrictions.

Secondaly, it would be a very expensive affair to maintain the depth of the channel. And all those money would be recovered from the ships using the sethu samudram. So it will be very expensive for the ships to sail through sethu samudram as each time they would have to pay the usage fees which would be minimum Rs 50 Lakh. At Chennai the fees for 7 Km channel is 12 lakhs. At Tuticorin the fees for usage of the channel which is 5 km long is more than 10 lakh Rs. So you can imagine what would be the usage fees at Sethu samudram which is more than 100 KM long channel.

Also if the channel is developed then India will be opened t

Dear Mr.Md.

Our NAVY cheif has warned against it. Its a natural security cover. If destroyed its going to be a security threat he went on record saying this. Now you want economic boost or security? Just for a while leave aside the religious aspect.

ok.. now lets now get down to mere facts..

"Please dont think that way man. Its a good project for our country our See ports will get a big boost because of this project. Kochin and Bombay port will have better load factor. This will bring foreign currency and will boost the exports of our country. Now this is enjoyed by the colombo see port.
"

what boosts r sea ports goin to get..
whats the imp of sethu samudran..
is it goin to reduce cost or turn around time?
whats the maximum depth that can be dredged and maintained?
why's dmk so interested in settin up this project?
dont we hav other immediate needs as a nation as far as shiping and logistics is concerened?
hows it goin to help other ports like tuticorin and kochin whn our ports over utilized already without the lack of a transhipment hub?
