Dear Sanjay, forget about North Eastern States. Even many people in Maharashtra do not know how many States are in South India (I have chosen Maharashtra due to proximity - no offence intended). They have a generic name "Madrasis" for all South Indians!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly JGN. I had the same experience while working in Mumbai. Even if you say you are from Karnataka (whose border touches Maharashtra), they still call you Madarasi just because you are South of Maharashtra. (No offence intended).

not only in maharashtra.. if you go to south - particularly in chennai - if you donot belong to Tamilnadu or Kerala or Karnataka and if you speak Hindi - you are called NORTH INDIAN - whether you belong to Asam or Gujarat - you are just one - NORTH INDIAN.

Boss, please don't quote your own personal experience.
Though I am from Karnataka, they understand what Karnataka is. So do they understand Andhra and Kerala as well.
People of Tamil Nadu are not dumb not to know the 4 southern states. Infact, in South, we do study the geography of India in much greater detail than other states. Hence, we are much aware of the geography. OK.
If you speak Hindi, they may perceive you as a North Indian. But if you tell them, where are you from, they will know.
Unlike some uni-dimensional Maharashtrians who feel all from South India are Madarasis and MUST eat Idli, Dosa and Sambar for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
