Self above nation
by shiva on Feb 26, 2008 07:01 AM   Permalink

It is clear cut that the issue is self above national interests. We are dependent on Middle East Oil-70%, more than many including China. We can be blackmailed anytime, as oil is becoming a weapon of politics and is high in foreign policy of many. Recent world tensions are stoked by the big powers securing their supplies.

The alternate energy is still far away. Solar can be a plus for us, but it is two to three times more expensive. Hydel will invite the wrath of environmentalists. Let us not wake them up!

We should pursue all avenues. When China is getting it all from everywhere, why should we be so afraid? Have they mortgaged their interests to US & others? Our inability to decide on anything has made others ignore us. Australia bends backwards to please the Chinese as they know their demand for their minerals can give them fortunes. They are ever ready to supply uranium to them. We cut a sorry figure, as we have to comply with the basics, get approval from Nuclear Supplier's Group of which China is a member. We are recycling the fuel and the scientists know we are at the end of the tether.

Is it too much to expect our leaders to put their heads together to find solutions to basic national issues? Where are the road maps for energy security down the line? What solutions do the various parties have?

The sad part is the elections are decided on issues that play on the emotions and parties can survive by blaming others ad naseum. The voters are sold dreams.
