No morality
by Rajesh Kumar on Feb 07, 2008 01:51 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

This is happening all over in one or another form. Once it happened with my wife when she complained a back pain and doctor touched near thighs (unacceptably close to her private part) and asked how was she feeling. That too in presence of me and one nurse. That was too embarassing for me. But kept quiet. I did not know how to react to this. Although i never went again to that hostipal.

Our doctors are sick (sex starved)

When a patient presents with back pain, one needs to rule out compression of the spinal cord. This can sometimes present as trouble with the bladder and bowel control and loss of sensaion or power in the legs. However one of the earliest signs is something called saddle anaesthesia, wherein the patient loses sensation of the perianal area. It is a good doctor who checks for all these signs. And you seem to mention there was a Chaperone in attendance. Maybe the doctor should have explained better what he was doing and why.

Unfortunately, everybody thinks they are experts suddenly. This doctor was punished for a crime. That does not mean every doctor is a criminal and doctors are sex starved.
Among women in India, pelvic inflammatory disease and uterine abnormalities are among the top 5 causes of back pain. These are often diagnosed by a "per vaginal" examination which is done by by inserting a finger into the vagina and examining. You were embarrassed because of your ignorance - how she was feeling meant- are you feeling any pain; not if she felt good. I feel sorry for you- he performed the procedure in the presence of another woman (nurse) which is standard procedure - All examinations of private parts are performed in the presence of another woman apart from family member so that nothing improper can go unchecked and allegations have a witness.
Instead of discussing and asking questions to your doctor if you keep quiet and ill-informed and run from one to another you would have seen 20 doctors in a year and, one of them might end being a sex starved maniac.
So here is my advice
1. Check your doctor's credentials (higher fees doesnt mean better doctor!!)
2. Ask why something is being done. A good doctor must explain what he is doing and why he is doing it.
3. All sensitive examinations must be performed in the presence of another woman.
4. Instead of reading junk on rediff, read about backpain or whatever your symptom is from a good book or website.
Hope your wife has recovered. Good luck.
