"Back to Bangladesh" would mean WB was once part of Banglladesh, which it never was. It's the other way round- the part that's now called Bangladesh was once a part of undivided Benagl and undivided India. That said, those commies who have their feet firmly planted in India but heads outside (Chinistan) might as well be shipped off to their "fatherlands"

Democracy and communism cannot exist together. The way stalin and all other east european dictators managed to hung to power, was only by brutally repressing any opposition. The commies have ruled bengal the same way. Their ideology got exposed when CPM goons acted alongwith Police to suppress poor old Nandigams guys.Going by this logic, I don think ordinary bengali would have voted for basu willingly. That answers your second question.

The commies were able to come to power in WB only because of the misrule by the SS Ray government, and the excesses done by him during the Naxal movement. There was an ever-lingering fear amongst the people of WB that with Congress returning to power the horrors of the Naxal era would return as well, and with an even greater magnitude. That itself ensured that Congress never returned to power in the next 10 years; during which time the commies also made sure that opposition was effectively destroyed in WB.
The sorry state of WB now desperately needs someone like Dr. Bidhan Ray or Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ghosh, or else it's destined to remain the sh*thole that it is now.
