the thing doc should have done
by k k on Aug 09, 2008 08:20 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

It is very sad to hear the treatment of the doctor and it is totally an unfortunate incident. I can not imagine what he must have gone thru that night in prison along with other inmates. It must have been a very traumatic experience. While it is always easy to comment on hind site, the doctor should not have pleaded guilty and paid the fine. I am sure his emotional distress contributed to his judgment and the fact that fighting the charges would have taken a lot of time, energy and resources, still pleading not guilty would have been appropriate. And after all being is USA for 30 years and still not standing up to fight for his rights is not understandable. Taking the easy way out is as said is always easy but had he resisted, he would have had a better case. And than filing the case against the injustice causes to him by the authorities, he would have than reminded all the law enforcement agencies that we Indians too can stand up to our rights and than would have treated other people with some respect in future. By his actions, i am afraid the good doctor lost a chance to prevent similar agony to the future Indian travelers. Just my opinion and any comments most welcome

Do you think the authorities would have acted this way, had the passenger been an european,a japanese or a chinese? What image our country cuts with the international community, matters a lot in the way indians or persons of indian origin are treated by the westerners.
