You have to give total freedom to people to speak whatever langauge they want to. Govt. cant control it. Today english, hindi is spoken as link language in india. To people who cant speak other's lang. Thats good. So when two marthi people are meeting they can talk in marathi, but if he is meeting guy from south, north. he has to talk in either hindi or english. He cant expect that guy to learn marathi. thats simple. All the demand coming now days to force kannada or marathi to outsider is nothing but sick game. They are stoping indian talent to get settled in any part of india and make economy grow. and this is so viatal for growth, job creation. If u anlayse any city u will find that the outsider has done maximum contribution to the growth of business, infrastructure. u have to respect them, cant force them to learn your language. u speak your language marathi, kannad at home, friend. why should u force it to others ?

I'd like to mention a change in this agenda. Agreed that language should not be forced (In fact Dr. U.R.Ananthamurthy uses 'voluntary' term). But, people coming from outside Karnataka should respect Karnataka & Kannada for what its giving back to us. For that matter, an Indian living in U.S should always respect that nation or land for what its giving back. If one feels a region is not giving back any favors, simply return back to ones native place instead of curbing & criticising others. Finally, the respect for the land that gives our daily bread (and much more) should come from our own hearts.

People living in a state for a long time must learn the state language and give respect local traditions.

People living in any state for a long time will naturally pick up the language of that state. There are people from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, etc settled in Kerala who speak Malayalam as good as the local population! There is no need for any one to force language down the throat of unwilling masses. I am a multi-linguist who can speak half a dozen languages and also understand another three languages.

Sometimes it does not happen. I had a classmate, who was living with his family in Kolkata for many years, but he did not know Bengali. Similarly I came across an Engineer from Midnapur (WB), but was surprised to know that in their village they speak only Urdu and not Bengali.

Those sort of things mainly happends in Border areas. People of some parts Palghat in Kerala speak Tamil and some people on the other end (Kasaragod) speak Kannada. We cannot generalize based on the habbit of a few migrants from other areas.
