Its shocking here to see ppl equate Scotland Yard and NYPD with Indian police when we know India is the third most curropt country in the world. Let it be known that the police here is most respectful and professional and so are judges. I can say this as I have experienced this twice when I was caught for speeding. In both cases police followed the rules perfectly and they always addressed me as Sir. And having seen how Indian police and courts work, I was pleasently surprised to see that when I went to pay my fine, the court worked more like a private company treating me like a customer. Contrast that with Indian police who will use swear words and lathis even before they find out your identity and fault.
The attitude of police and CBI has often been adversely remarked on even by indian courts like Hawala case where the courts said the CBI was not interested in investigating as Advani and other leaders were involved and had to dismiss the case. It has happened in Ansal, Priyanka Mattoo, Case of a Delhi model....why is it then that people are finding it objectionable when police is being condemned in this case for right reasons. Sometimes think beyond your country and like humans its good for you only.

Well said... There is no doubt.. we can never in a million years compare the indian police to NYPD of Scotland Yard. Fact is that people in such high posts think that they are beyond the law. Fine example is last week, I met some cop in the lobby of my building as I was going to work. He was standing and talking to the caretaker of my building where I rent a flat. I wanted t confirm something from the caretaker, but this cop rudely started asking me questions like where do I stay, who all stay with me, how much rent do I pay, where do i work and stuff like that.. Not that it was any of his business.. Not once did he refer to me as sir or Mister. When asked why he was interested, he just said, I will ask whatever I want to and you must answer.. THis attitude of the indian police is what makes them most corrupt..

I believe you can refuse to answer in such cases. or is there a law that you have to answer all questions posed by the police for no reason?

My understanding is that if you are arrested, then you can refuse to answer any questions without your lawyer being present.. but if you are not arrested, then it is just like any other converstaion.. only thing is that the other party.. is very rude and obnouxious..
