I guess most of us are confused with this judgement, if the reservation system is used to placate any community based on religion(example christians and muslims given reservation coz they are a minority) it is completely wrong and not a progressive step. However if there are segments in the society which are backward due to 1)They belong to a region which historically was not exposed to mainstream life - eg tribal belts 2)The community suffered historical injustices - Lowercaste communities being ripped off by uppercaste in few villages , not allowed to study in schools operated by uppercastes,
these segments of people does qualify for reservation. The OBC group is meant to be representative of this social reality.

My dear George I'm afraid you have missed the crux of the problem. The sections that you talked of, have already been covered under SC/ST quota. None is against those reservations, though the time stipulated by Ambedkar lapsed long long ago. Now ever since Aug 15, 1947, every government (mostly Congress) has been claiming that they have developed the country tremendously. Then, how come, huge chunks of castes far above the sections you talked of, have overnight become 'backward' to be given as much as 27% reservations? Reservations are a type of intoxicant which none likes to forgo, they demand their perpetuation for ever, or until the people of other castes become dead as a dodo. EsterAstir.
