Congress hails OBC order as ''landmark judgement''
by siva sankar on Apr 10, 2008 02:51 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

The Congress today hailed as a "landmark judgement" the Supreme Court's clearance to 27 per cent quota for the OBCs in institutions of higher education and noted that the protests and "motivated allegations" on the issue of reservation have now been silenced.

"It's a landmark judgment, very significant as it upholds the most remarkable, laudable initiative of the Government, of the Congress party," AICC spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said.

"It has been upheld by the court. There was a whole cacophony of protests. There were all kinds of motivated allegations made and that has now been silenced," he said.

Singhvi said the UPA Government's decision to give reservation to OBCs was based on the idea that there should be co-ownership of the elements of democracy by the backward classes and a crucial element in this was co-ownership of educational facilities.

"I think that basic point has to be understood and appreciated," he said.

Please do not mistake me. Already OBCs are co owners of democracy in terms of MLAs, MPs and rich businessmen. Most of the rich guys in TN are powerful OBC lobbies. I support this for poor OBCs but when creamy layer came into picture why can't the entire stuff be done on economic lines for all?
