When I came to Chennai, I was confident that I can stay comfortably in any part of India. I have seen almost all the cultures of India at the college and had pals from almost all parts of India.
How wrong I was!! Madras and Madrasis proved me so wrong. You have to be a different kind of creature to survive in this so called metro of India. Here are some of the tips to survive in this region, which I am sure will act as surviving tips for many and it is the central idea of this blog.
I have spent close to five years in Tamilnadu to experience it. The rules below do not apply to the whole bunch, but defintely applicable to 90% of the population. And you judge a culture by the majority.
1. Rule - 1: ------------
Never speak in Hindi.
... Even if the other person can speak (weird, ha!). And God forbid if the other person is a Tamil. Never ever speak in that language with them. They are more dangerous than who really can not speak. Of course, you can not understand even if he speaks (and their is tinge of pride when he speak...because he can speak)
Of course, all Tamil will talk in Hindi once they are outside Tamilandu...well they are like that, the race is full of cowards and the whole state is paradoxical. Will come on that later.

See How dare the other people are on us. We can sometimes speak Hindi, but we hate that because you people think that we should only speak Hindi with you. Can you speak Tamil when we come to your place?
You're an idiot who cann't make friends because you wanted them to only speak Hindi.
You people wanted to be more dominant that you're compelling us to speak Hindi.
Do you know about our tradition, How foreigners got attracted towards our language and culture? Are you really interested in becoming a friend of any of our people? You don't know about our people or land. You'd been here for 5 years but you searched simply a Hindi speaking fellow here not any good friend to communicate. Don't tell that we are cowards. we are the one who live here peacefully and secularly. We're not going to hurt any of you people. We never degraded any language for any reason. When we go and live in other states we'll only expect the mother tongue of those people from their mouths. Not our Tamil or your Hindi. They're native people who only know how to contact in their mother tongue. You can speak only Hindi and expecting only Hindi from others. How weird it is actually!!

Thanks for the vivid discription. Rules are fine and in the people need to survive. It was pretty unprecedented to attack Kannadiga restaurants in Chennai which was not the case earlier. The issue on the water sharing between KN and TN were on for quite sometime and it takes the front seat when the elections are announced. The problem is no one (no one in central government) to put an end to this asking state governments to behave properly and punish the politicians who were involved in inciting such violence. Today someone in Chennai was attached and this was reported widely and tomorrow the repeat will happen in KN. In fact, it started with attacking tamil interests in Bangalore and it is getting repeated in Chennai and this will not stop. The same happened sometime in Mumbia. I wonder, whether India is a safe place to live with such partisan attitudes why alone Chennai.

You know something that does not represent people fanaticsm. It just shows politicians of tamilnadu are idiotic. Tamil peoples are not taught with hindi at their schools. Whenver there is a fight the common people will not go and fight. Only the politicians representatives will go and fight and this is quite common across states just to gain votes. If you really think that peoples from tamilnadu are fanatic just take this case and answer me. In karnataka no bus plates were written in hindi nor in english. All the foreign companies should keep their name plates in kannada whether or not they keep their name plate in english. Are these not fanatism? My dear brother, do you think this is done by the innocent people. No. This is done by the both state politicians directly or indirectly. They are trying to break the country so that they rule karnataka as a country and enjoy the benefits derived out of it. So dont be innocent and raise a voice in this forum.
