You will see the thin strip of land ending at Dhanushkodi
Couple of miles before Dhanushkodi you will see that the land is thinnest.
Dig a Canal there !!!!
It will NOT be a major feat of Engineering A Simple feat of Engineering which will take 2-3 years. This canal will be 0.6 - 0.9 miles wide.
This is wide enough for ships to pass.
That is all there is to it.
You will be preserving RAM SETU and the coral gardens around it and also accomplish the objective of cutting a passage from PALK STRAIT to the GULF OF MANNAR.

You will also need a draw bridge across the Canal to allow trains to pass at a specified times.

Good thought, But there are engineering issues...and National Security issues...
Engineering issues:
- Take a look at the scale of the map. To use a searoute for both military and shipping purposes, you need 4-5 mile long canal, also taking into consideration the tides. The area you are referening to is far less than that.
Military Issue
- Dhanushkodi is indian territory. Having a canal to the North west of it will mean that the canal will go through indian waters/territory. That is a national security risk. You do not want ships carrying containers from other countries (Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc) to have a free flow through Indian Territory or Indian waters.
