The parties which had got the second and third largest number of seats first joined together to form a Government, thereby preventing the party which got the largest number of seats from forming a Govt.
Then No.3 broke in order to give the CM's post to the heir apparent of their party. They took the support of No.1 and then entered into an agreement to give the CM's post to No.3 after the first half of the balance tenure.
Now No.3 has ditched No.1 after enjoying its stay in the top. Who knows, No.2 will again come and support No.3 to keep No.1 out.
Something (partly) similar happened in the Central Govt. in 1996 and one of the major beneficiairies of that game is also the key player / beneficiary of today's game.
Let us hail Indian democracy ! Some innocent may be telling that democracy is as per the will of people. Let us ignore such naive people and go ahead with our smart ways.

No.1, No.2, No.3.. all of it is pointless till the junta decides to vote unanimously for one party. No matter which party comes to power it will do better than a coalition govt if it has majority. Unfortunately, there are no strong people forums to get the people who matter together, the voters!
