The BJP is officially a joke now. Their arguements make absolutely no sense and have resorted to petty name-calling and personal attacks. While Gandhi was a follower of Lord Ram his philosophy, teachings and ideology were independent of any one religion. You can be an Atheist, Hindu, Buddhist or Muslim and still believe in Gandhian values. Secondly the Gandhi surname has nothing to do with Mahatma Gandhi himself. Sonia Gandhi and her children have taken the surname of Rajiv Gandhi who got it from his father Feroz Gandhi who was certainly not related to Mahatma Gandhi. If my surname is Singh does it mean I have to believe in Bhagat Singh's philosophy and if I dont I'll have to reject the Singh? The BJP finding itself politically marginalisd is making a brouhaha out of a non-issue. They probably hoping to incense people and have a few riots here and there so they can capitalise on it. Hope peole have better sense than to oblige this silly, bigoted party.

For your information..Rajiv's father and Indira's husband had original name as Firoz Khan..not Gandhi!!!His Father and cousins still carry the name of Khan!Firoz khan was a son of Muslim father and Parasi mother(Gandhi)..When Indira met and married him in London(she converted to Islam before that)..it was not acceptable to Pandit Neharu...after much discussions and persuations...Firoz was forced to drop his surname Khan and instead took up her mother side's surname..Gandhi!! This info is just to share..i dont have any motive to say that it was wrong or right!

You are right about the beliefs part of it, but would like to correct you on the Gandhi surname piece of it. Feroz did get the surname 'Gandhi' because Mahatma Gandhi adopted him as his son since Nehru was unwilling to let Indira marry some unknown Mr.X which Feroz was at that time (it was a love marriage, much against the wishes of Nehru himself but he had to accept since Mahatma Gandhi intervened).
I am not trying to defend BJP here, because even I don't like the crap they are resorting to right now. Just sharing a piece of history that I have come to know. No controversial news from Nehru-Gandhi family will ever be part of history books:), so there is just a miniscule chance of people getting to know the same.
