the fact is that effectively some 10-15% of the population in rural and small town bengal today directly or indirectly owe their livelihoods and lives to CPM.. in any state, the economy and society is effectively run by these 10-15% people.. teachers, policemen, govt officers, doctors etc, businessmen.. the rest 85% of the population are either insignificant or are too rich to bother.. in all other states (even Kerala) this 10-15% popln is split among naturally occurring political and ideological groups.. so, you have among them supporters from Cong, BJP, even leftists and regional parties.. it is this 15% who can organise and manage and influence others
But it is in West Bengal that CPM, through 30 years of clever planning, has ensured that they control this group to a very large extent. I am predicting here that unless there's a vertical split within the Left Front, they won't lose any election in the next 50 years.. not because they've popular support, but because they've perfected the art of exploiting the methodology of Indian elections and civic life.. public opinion matters little, the opinion of the 15% who matter is taken care of. Metropolitan Kolkata may go away from CPM but life in the villages is different.. they just won't "lose" there..
Clever, very clever, very impressive, and very very sad..it is as close as you can get to an Orwellian state today.. as a Bengali from Kolkata, I feel sad. and the rest of India (including Kerala), be warned.

u r absolutely right ..it happens in all the states in india. 15% people cadre influence another 15% and manage (manipulate) another 15% and that is good enough to win the state elections. In WB the commies has perfected this art so well that they don't care a damn for the people.Look at the audacity of the CPM leaders. When the communists were thrown our to the garbage bin all over the world , here in India these guys unveil the statue of Lenin and they call themselves patriots. Theses people never let the poor grow and want bring all the rich to come in par with the poor.they have an easy solution. Stikes ..bandh.. close the mills & bring the owners to debt trap. Easy solution. They are doing this for many years and will do the same for next 100 years.here after i don't think any industry will survive in WB. Equality.. socialism.. sic

those industries will survive, and thrive, which benefit the 15%.
i feel like writing on endlessly on this but not right time for this now. someday, it is some of us who'll have to try and see what can be done to at least make the rest of India (and also many Bengalis) see the truth
