Artists, Students and teachers demanded immediate release of the two art students of M.S. University in Vadodara, arrested by the police for 'immoral' depiction of Hindu gods and goddesses in their paintings.
They also demanded revoking of the suspension order against the Head of the Department of the Arts faculty, who had supported the students.
Police had arrested two students of the University on Thursday for an exhibition of works, which was objected to by activists of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) after the right wing group members ransacked the exhibition alleging that the exhibition was an attack on Hindu religion's sensibilities.
India is a pluralistic society but when it comes to the freedom of artistic expression, we seem to run out of space.
Chandra Mohan has been made a "scapegoat" of the situation and the whole thing is "obviously pre-planned".
Earlier the moral police have slammed MF Husain for painting nude pictures of Hindu Gods. An arts student at the Maharaja Sayaji Rao University is arrested because his painting hurt religious sensibilities.
