The future of World's 4th largest economy!
by Chanakya on Mar 15, 2007 05:56 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

You may have noted that internal conflicts have increased manifold in India during that last few years, coinciding with its great economic development. That is actually contrary to the popular belief that economic development of the masses leads to less conflicts.

Something is seriously wrong with the "India Shining" story. The fruits of GDP growth has not reached the masses. Liberalization has increased income level disparities manifold. Wealth distribution has become more and more skewed with the progress of Indian economy. Look at prosperous Gujarat and poor Bihar. It is hard to believe that both the states belong to the same country. Even in a supposedly rich state of Maharashtra you have Mumbai and Vidarbha.

Unless we do something serious about poverty alleviation conflicts like this will only increase.

By the way, a little piece of statistics may help you all understand the situation. India is World's 4th largest economy in terms of total GDP. But in terms of GDP per capita its rank is 122! Both are measured after adjusting for PPP (Purchasing Power Parity).

Great Post, Chanakya. You are one of the few in these forums who talks sense and has a realistic viewpoint. Most others are taken in by the hype created by paid hacks who after all are working for their own bread. The media owners are only interested in keeping their own bread buttered and jammy which, is only possible if they suck up to the exploiters in this society aka industrialist/businessmen/politicos/bureaucots/assorted criminals et al.
