It is true that the West is not yet open to translations but could it be because Indian poetry has not yet evolved to the free verse and open form that characterises modern English poetry? Could it be because Indian poetry does not deal with general human issues but confines itself to specific Indian contexts? All acceptance of poetry, original or in translations, can come only if the audience is able to identify with its emotions and images.
