Why was the route of Metro passing 'close' Qutub Minar in New Delhi was abandoned and later reworked fearing prospective damages to this 815 years man made monument?
Why the project of Taj corridor (which would have made lot of dollars to our money minded govt) was put off after the hue and cry of environmentalists as the construction near Taj 'may' cause bad effect on this 359 years old man made monument. Please give attention here that these monuments were not going to be destroyed but were 'feared' to get damaged.
Will any government in China would destroy or even alter The great wall of China(2695 years old) for the sake of any amount of money?
Will any one allow pulling down 4507 years old Pyramids of Egypt in lieu of any uncountable amount of money?
If the answer is NO, then why this 17,25,000 years old man made monument is being destroyed for the sake of some coins?

well...i aint sure of the authenticity of the legend, but if it is indeed an important thing...due to which someone EVEN in the USA has asked for it to be preserved....then it should not be demolished!

"EVEN in the USA".whats that some kind of bench mark? for america a pencil made in 1960's is antique.Stop comparing usa to india you idiot. We have seen 1000's of USA's rise and fall. Some stupid guys in there blabbering does not help in anyway. If you want to stop it jump into the water and get a signature of rama or a skelton of the monkeys or atleast a man made stone.

Even in the USA....!!! What it means is, that even a fockin stranger(and a learned and educated one at that)...can see that there is some significance to it...but we Indians do not.
I do not corroborate it with the so-called religious myths of ramayana et al....but what are the downsides to it???

To the USA pandit, who speaks about underwater fauna and flora: If you are aware and living in the bramaputra valley in the northrn part of India, you have to be reminded of one thing. The source of the river is china, and china has build against conventions few dams on the river on its side. It is used effectively to generate its development... If there comes a war with India, the water will be let at one go and we can see few Indian friends like you "underwater"! That is reality... that is intelligence! That is the sprit needed here in doing things with brains! Not 1700000000000000000 year old Ram setu joke being discussed here

Adobe, If you point to even a small park or monument that is more than 100yrs old in USA, it can be preserved as a historical monument. I am not sure how much sense it makes to destroy a natural or man made structure like this. The article suggests that it should be made a tourist destination with glass bottom boats. Excellent idea. Will the US ever touch the grand canyon ? In surat, there is a grave of a muslim right at the center of a busy road. Nobody can remove it ! It's not even 50yrs old ! There might be some BS story behind it. The point is: even if it is a fable, the rama setu has sentiments of 1billion hindus attached to it. The GOI should strive to preserve the monument.

groundless faith! That is what I mean. But if you make a canal for the ships to go around, few ports will come up, few employment will be created and few stomachs will get filled. That is reality...

If u have mind u can think of an alternative, the destruction of ram sethu will results loss of precious water animals and many lives, ADOBE before destructing something first learn how to save and build lives. don't argue blindly.

well....nonetheless...even the ecological repercussions have to be taken into consideration while demolishing the same!!!
For all we know, it may be an ecological disaster resulting in the extinction of various flora and fauna underwater.
