US can not afford an unfriendly relation with India.Pakistan can be their partner to fight Osama but if they need prosperity to continue they have to keep India in good humor. They know it very well that if they do not transfer the latet know how to India, they will be ultimately a loose as Indian scientist are capable enough to meet the technological requirements. They may take little longer time to do it. Example is denial of super computer to India which we have overcome.
India has not ventured in a full fledged manner in production of arms otherwise the gap that exoists today would not have happened.
It is better for USA not to show us their teeth. Their warm shake hand is always welcomed.

I agree with you on India-US being natural partners. But politics is politics. I don't think the current deal will go thru in the short term.
The natural course for this to happen is:
- India continues to make itself business friendly and builds its economy and becomes globally integrated
- India improves its governance framework and makes the institutions transparent (CORRUPTION IN INDIA COMES DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY)
- The education and research scene in India improves exponentially
- India develops its own technology
This is a very slow process. It will be atleast couple of decades before this happens.
To speed up this scenario, we need an improved ENERGY situation. Nuclear energy is the fastest and most abundant.
