I believe like USA,The common person must be able to select the Prez in direct poll-so that the Prez is above the party-politics.The common man can see the individual's merits and and also it'll be the test for the parties values in the eyes of the common man.

you obviously don't understand the role of India's president with respect to his control over the administration or general afairs of the country. The US system is different. President runs the govt. In India, president is just a titualr head. Even his speech is written by the ruling party. A president in India is only useful in breaking a stalemate caused by no party having a clear majority in Lok Sabha.

The president is more than a titular head. Constitutionally, he/she can dismiss governments, reject laws passed by the parliament, take action as head of the armed forces. I agree the president does not as much power as the prime minister. In fact, we should elect our prime minister directly, and combine it into the post of the president, like the American system, make that person responsible responsible for Administration of the country. At least then the MPs and MLAs will not have the power to corrupt the administrations. There is too much power in the hands of the MPs and MLAs.
