@marigold, gladiator.....special mention to you guys
Consider the following: In 40-50 years from now gulf will run out of oil, what will happen to these countries then? As it is they aren't present in most of the knowledge industries. It is all oil money that is running it for them. What will happen when alternative fuels become commonplace? The growing population with high illiteracy rates/radicalism will not be 'advantages'......they will be big disadvantages. Something to think about huh?
Also wonderful job selecting the ids, marigold, gladiator.....most people will think you guys are non-Muslims but given the zeal with which you defend the growth of Islam......it isn't that tough to guess who you are.

1) WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE HISTORY OF ISLAM, THE FAITH GAINS IMPORTANCE IN THE ABSENCE OF MONEY.. SO POVERTY IS A CATALYST FOR FAITH..
2) ARABS ARE NOT SUCKING THEIR THUMBS... THEY KNOW THAT OIL IS GOING TO DRY IN A FEW YEARS.. SO THEY ARE INVSETING HUGE AMOUNTS ON BANKING, REAL ESTATES AND OVERSEAS INVESTMENTS....
3) YOU DONT KNOW ABOUT THE SAUDI'S GOLD RESERVE, IT IS STILL NOT EXPLORED.. IT WILL OPEN UP ONCE THE OIL DRIES...
4) SO IN 50-60 YEARS YOU CAN SEE TALENTED MUSLIMS WHO ARE WILLING TO CONTRIBUTE FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THIS WORLD...
5) THE NEWLY FORMED RUSSIAN ISLAMIC COUNTRIES ALONG WITH CHECHANYA HAS GOT OIL RESERVES WHICH WILL BE EXPLORED VERY SOON..
THE MORAL OF THE STORY IS "HOW CAN YOU TURN OFF THE LAMP WHICH IS IGNITED BY GOD"

Gladiator....if islam is going to progress to a moderate/liberal version, who can have a problem? I certainly dont.....I only have a problem with the radical....terrorised version of Islam which unfortunately has become too predominant.

Ohhhh as if we claim to be anything other than muslims... SO HOW IS MALAYSIA AND UAE THRIVING WITHOUT OIL ? KEEPING YOUR EYES CLOSED DOES NOT MEAN THAT THINGS WILL GO YOUR WAY...ITS JUST VERY HUMAN TO FIND WAYS OF EARNING....

UAE: Though predominantly Muslim, it still allows other religions to have their places of worship. They have a better emphasis on education and they have good business policies....all of which have helped sustain a non-oil reliant economy. But you are mistaken if you think they are not dependent on oil. Lot of the wealth of the super-rich their is in the form of assets that are heavily invested/securitized in oil.
Malaysia: Extremely rich in natural resources.....however since they dont have lot of land.....reality will catch up with them. Malaysia also has good economic policies in place and in general places emphasis on education.
In 40-50 years from now they will face the heat from a growing population.
