Assam and ULFA
by arnab deka on Jul 02, 2007 07:12 PM   Permalink

The issue of North east is more complex than it appears on the surface. Its a mix of several issues and all are entwined. Many people have raised several points.

Some one said "businesses are owned by non assamese hence its kinda injustice to the Assamese" if one is an Indian he or should be allowed to legally work anywhere, live anywhere, marry anywhere etc. Thats a right given to every Indian by the constitution. I know a lot of non Assamese who have assimilated so well and I understand when they say," I may speak a different language but Assam is my home and I don't know where to go".

Someone said the Govt is offering a decent economic package and Ulfa should agree to come to talks - Its too late for that. This should have been done ages ago and with proper thought and policy this issue could have been averted.ULFA is not coming to the table and I am sure both parties know they have nothing to discuss in reality.

Someone said" If unemployment was the cause for more terrorists bihar and orrisa would have several of them" - Both Bihar and Orissa have Naxal movements and Bihar is known for its Notoriety though the problem in Assam and in other parts cannot be equated on the same level but Unemployed youths are easily misguided.

Have experienced the situation first hand and being an Assamese,Army is not the solution and I am not sure if political will now will solve it either as its beyond that stage. I guess have to leave it to time...
