Relocation of Troops
by Amar Dave on Jan 23, 2007 07:25 AM   Permalink

As much as I may not like Gen Musharraf, relocation of troops in certain areas is actually beneficial to India. Don't get me wrong, we need to man our borders stronger than ever before and therefore no reductions should be made at all on LOC including Siachen. But reduction of troops in cities like Jammu and Srinagar is actually in India's interest. The patroling and fight against insurgents should be done by Kashmiri police and not the military. This way, a mom or a dad walking down the street will feel lot more free and relaxed in seeing their own son patrolling than seeing some stranger from Delhi or Madras patrolling their streets. In order to achieve this, there needs to be an increase in recruitment of Kashmiri police and better training and equipment need to be provided to them.
