Mulayam is merely a reflection of the political culture of UP. Why target Mulayam? He has been elected by the people. Let the MLAs bring the government down - NOT the central government by imposing president's rule. This sets a dangerous precedent.
Instead of targetting governments run by other parties in states, central govt should demonstrate good governance by setting an example through its own functioning and that of other states run by its part(y/ies). Now if the Supreme court disqualified the BSP MLAs supporting Mulayam, the state assembly is the place to test if the government can win a vote of confidence. If it doesnt, it goes. If it does, it stays.
Manmohan Singh should avoid unnecessary political drama by requesting President to impose president's rule in UP. Given the upcoming elections in UP such a move will undoubtedly smack of political opportunism.

absolutely Mr Madhavan, Only way is to get rid of article 356. But will these politicians ever do that. Even DMK wants to go with the congress. Astonishing! would Mr President help save the situation?
