"Indian by birth, Muslim by the grace of Allah, Patriot by choice"
Hello, everybody. May Allah grant you peace and shower His blessings and bounties on everyone.
I agree with Mr. Bhattacharjee that Muslims have not regularly raised their voice against all the atrocities being committed by members of their own community. First of all, I want to emphasize that there is no classification like a 'liberal Muslim' or a 'fundamentalist or hard-line Muslim' that exists in Islam. As far as the tenets of the religion are concerned, one either accepts the faith and follows it or he rejects it. So, one is either a Muslim or one is not. Period. However, people over the ages have had their own interpretation of the religion and have used it for their own ends. Unfortunately, the general followers of all religions are mostly unaware of the tenets of the religion. Therefore, they depend upon the so-called teachings of the mullahs and the pundits and the clergy and those 'revered leaders' generally twist the context to suit their own designs!
Coming back to Islam, the only correct way to observe the religion is the way shown by the Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) and the Rightfully Guided caliphs followed that way to the best of their abilities, always referring to the prophets teachings and the Quran. The Muslims were ruthlessly persecuted in the beginnning, but won over the entire Arabian peninsula within a short time. If there was ever any justification for 'terrorist type' tactics or guerilla tactics, the followers of the Prophet should have indulged in them, because they were subjected to atrocities not just by the opposing armies, but by the general population of the region. However, this was not done. Even when the region was conquered, there was no wholesale slaughter or revenge. Except for the cleansing of the Ka'aba (which was originally built by the Prophet Abraham and dedicated to Allah, but later on was used by polytheists to house over 300 deities), there was no desecration and destruction of the Jews' and Chiristians' places of worship or forced conversions authorised by the Prophet Mohammed(pbuh).
Therefore, my sincere advice to Muslims all over the world is to read and understand the Quran themselves and to base all their actions and deeds on the way of the Prophet. A way which is the model of peace and restraint and understanding and patience, not of revenge and intolerance.
And to the non-Muslims, specially of my country, India, I appeal to them not to be swayed by the intolerance being shown by members of their own community only for their own nefarious gains. Please do not brand all of us as terrorists or anti-nationals. For every Muslim who has chosen to tread the path of the terrorist or fundamentalist, there are tens of thousands who do not subscribe to that view and are fiercely patriotic.
Let us also not get into the argument of right or wrong religion, for, ultimately, we will all have to answer for our own deeds one way or another. And Allah says in the Quran that He is the creator of evreyone and everything and He, in His wisdom, has made the differences in people and it is only He who has the authority to judge.
And, in any case, life is too short and complicated for all of us to waste it and abuse time by geting into these matters. let us all strive hard to better our own lot and to take our country forward.
Incidentally, my non-Muslim and Muslim friends alike, "Jehad" means 'struggle' and not 'holy war'. The struggle has to be against our own base desires and against oppression of any kind; to uphold the Truth and to lead our lives according to the dictates of Allah as revealed in the Quran and exemplified by the life and teachings of the Prophet (pbuh). For the Muslims, it is essential that they understand Islam themselves through the Quran and Hadiths ( teachings of the Prohet [pbuh]) and not to blindly follow the rantings of self-centred and often mis-guided 'mullahs' and perveyors of hate and bigotry and hypocrisy in the name of Islam.
may Allah give all of humanity the guidance to look for the truth and the strength to follow it.
