Land on moon and attain what?
by Ameya Bhakay on Feb 05, 2007 02:28 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

As Mandar said, spend on infrastructure. What is spending INR 10000 Crore for a Moon mission going to bring us? Better roads, water supply, public transport. So many places to still improve on. What is this mission for then? Sheer waste of Money...

Well, India's defence budget is huge too. Should we cut that as well? Why spend money on ISRO at all, chandrayaan or no chandrayaan. Who really needs satellites? African countries manage perfectly well without them. If required we can use bandwidth on other country's satellite. Understand that the technology used to send a satellite to the moon can also be used to send a missile half way around the earth. Understand that it is not an either or situation - we have to progress in science AND progress in basic things simultaneously. This mission is a proof of concept. An exploration of space, if you will. Most of the modern inventions (wireless, internet, nuclear energy, remote sensing etc) are a result of research funded by NASA and DARPA (Defense advanced research projects).

ISRO is one of the few indian organization that has had a good measure of success at what it does. India is acknowledged to have a fine satellite program thanks to ISRO. Even the Americans want to send stuff to the moon on the chandrayaan, I think. The best way of destroying all that is to cut their funding or clip their wings...

technology development is required agreed. but there can be better ways of employing the time and money by our "scientists". Satellites, missiles, other weaponry is a neccessity for a country as huge as india. but moon mission???? absolutely useless. we are already spending on Satellites, missiles, other weaponry. That is good enough now think for a while for those people who are starving. we have a responsibility towards them as well. if we are paying our taxes, then substantial portion of those amounts should go to these poor and downridden people. what if we r technologically advanced when half the population is under the poverty line?

Yes we need good deterrent and missiles to protect our country and any research and expenditure in that direction is welcome step. But mission to moooooon is little toooo much and such expenditures are not justified and the common man tax money cannot be wasted when they are yet to get the basic need round the clock.

Of course people are starving, infrastructure is pathetic, slums and pollution levels on the high, no money to link rivers and India is surrounded by so many other issues. Our tax money is well utilised to sponsor so many policitians luxury, convenience and security. Do you get any police protection anyday since your paying tax? Or will any policeman escort your sister's vehicle when she drives late into the night? The answer is No! You don't even get clean drinking water for the tax that you pay, the very basic necessity of life. So that you paid tax, you are not given any respect in your own country and nobody bothers using your money the right way.

Just that the scientists are so busy funding their research with our tax money to launch some hydrogen fuelled vehicle to the moon which I am sure will explode mid-way. The need of the hour is to start exploring ways to fund scientific research to cut down fuel costs, build better and sturdier roads, improve defense research and find ways to fund defense research by commercialising their ideas, help distribute meterological findings in a better and quicker way to farmers, Link all rivers through pipelines and clean or build reservoirs around each river. There is so much one can think of in building India to a superior nation, instead of banking pride by launching some vehicle which is of no use to the country.

Firstly mr.krishnaswami, please do not be so pessimistic about the vehicle exploding mid-way. Such a statement just shows the level of mentality you have. FYI, Indian missions are technologically very advanced and their success rates are one of the highest!!
Secondly, the mission is aiming to cut down fuel costs too!!
Thirdly, the mission is NOT "of no use to the country" as u put it. I would advise you to do your homework before makeing such sweeping statements. Go and read!!! There are thousands of articles on the internet itself!!
