1. Pulpit came from the word pulp-IT and the bishops follow this religiously ever since
2. 'Lay' public. One who is fit to be 'laid' is called thus as opposed to clergy (is a sort of anagram of Lecher).
3. 'Mass' and 'Service' refers to that mass which every bishop worth his pizza is supposed to use during the after-service. Some like it to mean boys others nuns
