What's in a name? The real name of Hinduism is Sanatan Dharma. Let us say, Hinduism is just a nick name. What did your mummy called you in childhood? Same thing.

You are right many may not be aware !! Do you think every Muslim knows everything about Islam or every Christian knows everything about Christianity. I am not against any religion but against those who spread hatred and believe in divide and rule.
And about the name: I would only say one thing that the word INDIA AND HINDU are corelated and related to the river INDUS (Sindhu, unfortunately it no more in INDIA). You are right in saying that in no holy book the word hindu is mentioned. But what is the point in it. "THOSE WHO FEEL AS HINDU ARE HINDUS"

This is how the religion Hindus came up and whether it was Islam or Hindus who were in this world first is a question of hen or egg

Hindi started to emerge as Apabhramsha in the 7th century and by the 10 century became stable. Several dialects of Hindi have been used in literature. Braj was the popular literary dialect until it was replaced by khari boli in the 19th century.

According to historians, the origin of Hinduism dates back to 5,000 or more years. The word "Hindu" is derived from the name of River Indus, which flows through northern India. In ancient times the river was called the 'Sindhu', but the Persians who migrated to India called the river 'Hindu', the land 'Hindustan' and its inhabitants 'Hindus'. Thus the religion followed by the Hindus came to be known as 'Hinduism'.
It was earlier believed that the basic tenets of Hinduism were brought to India by the Aryans who invaded the Indus Valley Civilization and settled along the banks of the Indus river about 2000 BC. However, this theory has now been proved to be a flawed one and is considered nothing more than a myth.
According to scholars, the evolution of Hinduism may be divided into three periods: the ancient (6500 BCE-1000 AD), the medieval (1000-1800 AD), and the modern (1800 AD to present). Hinduism is commonly thought to be the oldest religion in the history of human civilization.
