Nuclear deal lacks merit!!!
by american on Aug 30, 2007 04:34 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

Indias power shortage has nothing to do with nuclear power!!!
No country can afford to rely on energy whose fuel has to be imported from outside.
Europeans have reaslised that for gas they have to depend on Russia, Ukraine and other countries which flexes which flexes their muscle at own will. Same thing with Oil. it comes from middle east, one of the most dangerous place on earth!!
So they are now clevery shifting into biofuel and other renewable sources so that in coming 50 years they will not have to depend on Russia and Middle east.

We are following are reverse strategy. After the deal we will be totally dependent on Australia, US or South Africa for uranium!! I don't understand the merit of this deal!!!

In 2006, 3.9 gw of nuclear power was generated, 3 per cent of India%u2019s total power generation. In the most optimistic scenario, after the operationalisation of this deal, this would grow, at best, to 25 gw by 2016, or just over 7 per cent of the projected generation required.
is it worth selling our sovereignty for?

George 3% of 2006 and 7% of 2016 is not just 2.3 times. Look into Actual Jump and look into Thorium cycle utilisation coupled with Reprocessing advantage.

Also tell me why CHINA is going for 77 new Nuclear reactors in the same period, in which 20 reactors for India is a pain to KARAT / BARDHAN.

Ofcourse 3% of 2006 and 7% of 2016 is not just 2.3 times.
But it is 7% of what we require in 2016. I dont think you get the point at all.. the problem is not with number of reactors or the amount of nuclear material. It about the terms in hyde act.

(B) the country has a functioning and uninterrupted democratic system of government, has a foreign policy that is congruent to that of the United States, and is working with the United States in key foreign policy initiatives related to non-proliferation;

(C) such cooperation induces the country to implement the highest possible protections against the proliferation of technology related to weapons of mass destruction programs and the means to deliver them, and to refrain from actions that would further the development of its nuclear weapons program; and

(D) such cooperation will induce the country to give greater political and material support to the achievement of United States global and regional nonproliferation objectives, especially with respect to dissuading, isolating, and, if necessary, sanctioning and containing states that sponsor terrorism and terrorist groups, that are seeking to acquire a nuclear weapons capability or other weapons of mass destruction capability and the means to deliver such weapons;

these are few of them.

I as Indian Give a damn to Hyde act.
Hyde act is a US internal problem.

123 Nuclear deal and subsequent IAEA / NSG agreement will decide forward path.

India knows how to work around and find loop holes.
Tarapur is no more supported by US , we are getting supplies from Russia.

2x1000 MW Kundan Kulam reactors are with Russian support.

If US tries to behave nuts than we Indians give a damn.

This month India is getting Nuclear SUB from Russia on a 10 year lease.

Do you think India sold its interest to any country so far.

If 123 Deal falls through as we wanted to test a nuclear device than we give a hoot to US.
Let US stop the supplies. We will have many other suppliers by than.

USA was against us when we detonated Plotunium Bomb in 1974.

USA was against us when we repeated the act with 5 Explosions in a span of 2 days in 1998.

We know how to move ahead.
Our position is not like IRAN.

Both India and Iran went for Nuclear technology , way back in 1950's.

Iran is still facing hurdles and has a long way to go.

China went far Nuclear technology only after 1970 ( Nuclear power generated Electricity)

Right now it is generating twice that of India ( Through Nuclear Route)
By 2020 , India will be nowhere close to China even if Commies allow us to follow the plan. ( No more internal Delays)

the US president has to submit a report each year on India's performance. The hyde act puts forward certain criteria which India has to follow inorder to qualify for a nuclear deal with US.
If in one of the annual reviews, they find that India is not in line with hyde act, they can(have to?) withdraw from the act.
By then India would be completely dependent on the nuclear fuel from Us and any lose of fuel would create major power crisis.
No to mention all the multi million dollar nuclear reactors which will become useless.
i am not saying this will happen but this could happen.

On one side you say 3% to 7% is not a great jump.
On other side you say US abrupt withdrawl is going to plunge India into a major power crises.
What is your stand.

Also I am telling you >> No worry we know how to keep our supplies running if US withdraws.

India is not a baby on a breast feed.

Look into US / China 123 nuclear deal.
Based on that China is going for 77 reactors , deal is more stringent than Indian Deal.
Do you think China is scared of US withdrawl.

On the other hand CHINA is regulary flouting MTCR and giving latest Missiles to Pakistan.

I really wonder what you guys are afraid of.

No Country exposing much about Nuke power. European highly rely on Nuke power. I do accept that they rely on other countries for gas and oil. What about India?. We have thorium reserves. If you refer BBC website. Most european countries use high volume of Nuke power than other resources.

India is making a good use of Uranium and Thorium through well researched Reprocessing.

This technology is India's. It has nothing to do with US or Russian Influence.
In the whole loop orders will be placed for around 20 reactors( not necessary to US)

Commies are idiots and do not understand the whole concept. Want India to remain energy starved and blacked ou like west Bengal.

W Bengal Electricty consumption per capita is no match to those in Industralised South India or West India.

W. Bengal literally threw out Industry during Jyoti Basu Days , now they are begging for Industralisation, and Mamta Benerzee is giving them their own medicine.
