If we do not get this deal we ll spend another 10 years in the dark without electricity till we have the technology to generate power by using Thorium. We still do not have the final tech to generate power through these Fast Breeder Reactors. We should take this deal to generate power and speed up the research on fast breeder reactors so that as soon as we have the production capabalities using thorium based technology we can just stop importing uranium. But right now we need Uranium based tech so that we get power and we are nt left behind and go back to the dark ages... and yah this deal is only civilian so no need to worry abt military nuclear instalations. n we are free to test nuclear weapons. the Hyde Act is just a cosmetic effect by the US government to shut the mouths of the Non proliferation hawks in washington who are opposing this deal tooth n nail... The US understand it has no leverage to stop India from testing weapons and it dosnt want to risk billions of dollars of investment by imposing nay sanctions. remember 1998 aftre the tests the imposed sanctions but had to bite the dust and remove sanctions after realizing it was their industries that were suffering.. so be cool and just use this deal to the maximum and do not let the commies Headless Chickens take India back to the dark ages

Bhaiyon, I am just asking you all to support for removal of testing clause. Its none of their concern to tell us what to do. And the billions of dollars will be going from India's pocket. US wont build those reactors here for free. And all non proliferation hawks are bluffing. This clause is like a stick that we keep with us to keep the dog from biting us. The dog will stand away but will never dare to bite. So we will be afraid of the consequences and will never test. Indira Gandhi didn't not order second test because of US pressure. That is the only agenda of US.

I agree with you particularly on the issue of "removal of testing clause". We are independent country. So our internal matter should't and must not be under scrutiny of any other country. I think we Indians should feel proud to be 'Babui' having own nest rather 'Chorui' staying in big house of others. Any deal is welcome for the interest of our motherland but not letting down our freedom.

Yeah and what of the BJP lead govt moratorium on nuke tests after our last tests ? Where were you to oppose that then ? Or is it that it gets to be bad in a govt other than the knikerwallahs proposes it ?

BJP's moratorium on testing was with a statement that we do not need further testing RIGHT NOW. It doesnt mean we do not need testing EVER.

Dear ms, For burning thorium, uranium is needed, that we donot have. If you study the body language of manmohan singh and Bush you can get so many clues from it. In my view, if this deal gets through, the next step of USA will be to force Pakistan to abondan its nuclear capabilitis. They have already forced Pakistan to keep Dr. Kadir under house arrest. So dear friend wait for a year or two, you will see USA forces enterining in Pakistan to denuke them. The new world have India as a nuclear power country while Pakistan without it.

US can never enter Pakistan. Right now US army is too stretched, and if US does any stupid move, it will have to fight with Taleban as well as Pakistan army. And in no case China will let it happen because keeping India busy with an enemy is in best interest of China. I dont say deal is bad, its needed, but not by putting in indirect ban on nuke test. If JUST that clause is removed, I am a happy person.

From wikipedia: The thermal breeder reactor. The excellent neutron capture characteristics of fissile Uranium-233 make it possible to build a heavy water moderated reactor that, after its initial fuel charge of enriched uranium, plutonium or MOX, requires only thorium as input to its fuel cycle. Thorium-232 produces Uranium-233 after neutron capture and beta decay.

And in gas the recent finds in the basin should make us less dependent on Iranian gas, not that we are getting too much thanks to Pakistan and the pipeline deal not working out
