Is nuclear energy the only alternative?
by Prasenjit Chakravorty on Aug 20, 2007 11:28 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

I have been following the humongous Indo- US nuclear co-operation for sometime now.
My question is very simple, which is cheaper and safer? Energy generated from windmills and wave turbines, or nuclear. Why are we hell bent on creativng a Chernobyl sometime in future, when 85000 MW of installed capacity of wind power alone is available to us along our vast coastline, the desert, and in the Himalayas.Add to this the installed capapcity of wave turbines from that immense coastline. These sources are also clean and green. And I bet they are finiancially as viable as the nuclear option.
The motive here is different. It has more to do with access to sophisticated technology, security concerns, and so on, what with having to live every day with the biggest rogue state as our immediate neighbour.

Financial viability of wind and wave energy is debatable. Nuclear energy is the most efficient energy source. I am against the deal though.. i don't trust US

Solar is the best alternative. To run a car, we need foot ball ground size solar panel. Great alternative! To power a house, we need to keep the whole house w/ hundred thousand dollars for each house & by the time, it gets break even, we need to change the panel.

I think instead of being sarcastic you should really do some homework. California which is a US state is already implementing million solar rooftops program to support its energy needs.
They are using the latest cleanest tech. we should be going for that.

other sources of energy like wind, solar are yet in a developmental stage. The huge energy demands of India need to be immediately addressed. So alongwith da other sources nuclear energy is da best option. It also helps INDIA leap in da elite group of responsible nations.
