I'd like to point out that "gorilla in the room" is a figure of speech. It means a roadblock or obvious problem that everybody is pretending not to notice. Its misused here in my opinion.
They are not calling the guy a gorilla actually.

A "600 pound gorilla" in american means what we call in India as a "heavy weight"...someone who can change the course of any thing being dealt with.
A "white elephant in the room" is a problem that you cannot but notice.
I don't believe the americans are disrespecting him.

They don't have respect for any Indian, Remember how defence minister was humiliated at a airport in US.

But they do resort to disrespect when they say that Mr. Kakodkar has tained himself. Has Mr Burns tainted himself for standing up for what is good for US? Such personal attacks have become US trade mark in diplomacy. India should pull out of the deal if such behavior continues.
