I think the problem with Muslims is that you still want to look at yourself as different (someone other than the common Indian). I understand that there have been lots of differences in the past, but it is important to realize that "We are all part of this great nation (India). Together we stand greater than the whole world." We are living in a democracy and we need to respect the majority opinion.
"The rules of the Nation/Law always comes first. No religion is taller than the rules of the nation."
I believe that the core problem with Islam is its limitation to look above and beyond the Holy Book. The core basis of humanity is to respect, care, help and tolerate other people and their view point.
The heads of the Islamic institutions need to have a open view point. The laws of any religion need to be reviewed by an individual and then take a practical decision whether or not to follow it.
Some rules written or created in 600-700 A.D. would definately would not be pracitcal to apply in the world of 21st century.
I hope you take this comment in a positive and constructive note. Thanks.
