All the mention about how the Vijayanagar empire protected the south and helped the south keep its culture intact might be true but it hardly has any relevance in the current seamless and networked world. A lot has been written about 'North India' and 'South India" to such an extent that there is this stigma against 'Madarasis' anywhere north of Hyderabad and against "North Indians" to anyone from north of the Vindhyas in the southern states. Even in the responses to this article we can see shades of this antagonism. Its more fostered on us than something thats real.
I think it would be more sensible for the media to work towards bridging this divide in our country. It might do a world of good to India if we start identifying ourselves as just Indians. A touch of nationalism might not do us harm at all.
