Bengalooru is a assertion of Kannada identity
by Chintu on Nov 02, 2006 11:57 AM   Permalink | Hide replies

I support the renaming of Bangalore to Bengalooru. Bengalooru is in sync with the Kannada culture and is supported by a majority of Kannadigas. Its a symbol of the reawakening of Kannada language, culture & identity which of late has been under attack from the recent outsiders who refuse to be sensitive to the local sentiments unlike the older non-kannadiga bangaloreans. The usage of the new name will take some time to percolate but it will; given sufficient time as the experience of Chennai/Mumbai/Kolkota shows.

Kannadigas and Kannada have been taken for granted by other Indians and especially the Indian English media. Corporates and other Indians may not agree with this but we are not asking for their approval. Its the right of the Kannada people and their representative government to rename Bangalore. If non-Kannadiga bangaloreans do not like what this, they are free to leave from whence they came. Bengalooru may lose out on some corporate investments but thats ok, money isnt everything in the world...culture has a more prominent place in the hearts of Kannadigas.

chintu??? I don`t think is a cultural usage of Kannada. Your name is probably chintaligamppa narsimha ponnuswamy gowda or some such name. why use chintu???? I can`t distinguish a kannada name from a telugu name or even a hindi name example vivek. Surely in my great grandfather's time you could look at a name and tell where the person hailed from. So why don`t you enforce it now??? ofcourse u might argue a persons name and city's name are two different things, but my argument is that the person`s name is much more important and you can see a person`s name is losing identity of his origin whereas you want the city's name to change to stick to kannada roots? why???? if you really want to then ensure that everyone uses their kannada name instead.
