Congratulations, Professor Gopinathan, for hitting

the nail right on its head. Your analysis is very

precise and timely, particularly because few people

these days seem to understand what it takes to

develop institutions like IITs. Increasing seats is

no solution, when it is becoming almost impossible

to find suitable faculty for the existing IITs. The

IT boom of past 10 years has already done its bit to

make the problem of faculty availability serious and

the recent decision of the government will dissuade more people to take teaching and research as a

career option.
