What should OBCs do?
by Sidharth Sankar on Jun 09, 2006 06:35 PM   Permalink | Hide replies

Well said, Prof. Gopinath!

Mr. Arjun Singhs political gimmick of extending caste-based reservations is shameless.

Caste-base policies are a tacit acknowledgement of the governments failure to provide high-quality primary education to all (a Constitutional obligation).

Caste-base policies promote caste-consciousness. Caste-consciousness is anti-national. Instead of being simply, Indians, we are now OBCs, SC/ST, and what have you.

Charity demeans the giver and receiver! They are worse than crutches. They are more like a bad addiction. India should kick this addiction!

this is the language that the forward Community has used for ages to suppress the voice of the underprivileged for ages. Your attitude is hit and run and you do not have the courage to even identify yourself which reflects the mentality of feudal suppression that we have suffered so long.
I did not say merit has to be replaced by reservation, I said merit is good, provided it serves the very purpose of education that the nation is paying for, and secondly Providing opportunities for the underprivileged need not be an on going affair,Laws against its use must be brought in for elimination of the creamy layer, but no one can argue that we should reduce the percentage of reservation since the new pool of candidates would benefit once the creamy layer is eliminated.
Abusing me and living in an ivory tower is useless since the overwhelming voice in this country is for reservation caste based and/or economy based. Income based reservation also should be included for all the children of BPL families who aspire for higher education and their education should be funded through scholarships or subsidized by the state as much as possible.

If one talks of separate institutions for OBC's and SC/ST's Then where is the question of bringing the academic level of underprivileged sections on par with Forward communities being addressed.Only when you allow both sections together there is a reasonable chance that backward castes will also improve or upgrade. Few of you may call it charity, but remember that i will call it as a sacrifice also on the part of Forward Communities and not just as the right of OBC's or SC/ST's. When the principles of Social Justice and Natural justice are in conflict with each other, one cannot allow natural justice to prevail just because it will lead to anarchy.Aspirations and dreams of all sections of the population have to be fulfilled if India is to remain a vibrant democratic country. Unless the State ensures equal opportunities at the entry level in primary govt schools on par with private schools, unless all children in this nation have a decent opportunity at good education irrespective of the caste they are born into or the economic condition of their families, Reservation is a must at all levels to ensure decency in society.
Thanks for giving me this opportunity.
