Why can't dr. Manmohan Singh resign from the post of Indian prime ministership and stand as a candidate for the UN Secretary General, because that post does not need a person with a backbone. Sad end to a geat economist.

How about nominating him for to be an US president? Dr.Singh is always good and has to deal with lots of different species called a coalition. Being a spectator, it is hard to understand the mind of an another person. Congress for sure is not willing/ready to go for next elections. They know the cost and consequences. So they are trying to accomodate and keep all the species happy.
