Indo US nuclear deal
by C V R Bharati on Feb 21, 2006 08:34 PM   Permalink

1. The basic deal seems good for india in that it helps India over come the issues related to nuclear commerce and technologies. Also our country in time to come can become a supplier of economically priced nuclear energy related technologies and materials.
2. But at the same time, we should retain the Nuclear weapons capability irrespective of whether others recognise it or not. With two nuclear armed neighbours with whom we have been having very troublesome relationship in the last 50 years, there is no way we can jeopardise our nuclear weapons capability.
3. Of course many like the author may feel that the development of India economically and technologically is more important than retaining the nuclear weapons capability, but having invested so many years of effort and having initiated work on thorium based nuclear reactors for power or weapons use, we should not surrender our right to develop this technologies by allowing IAEA or any other inspection agency to interfere in this aspect of our nuclear research. This is one area which can set us free from dependency on oil for our energy requirements.
