I think the decision was right at that time and the Indian Army did well as it always has. What is wrong with the Indian way is its politics with no vision for the future and the way they should modify the present to get a better future for the country. All decisions even now in foreign policy are taken with a knee jerk reaction with no idea of whats going to happen in the future.
We should have maintained enough influence in Bangladeshi politics, development and economics...which is what would have helped the relation between the two countries. We are doing the same in Nepal and in Tibet....with no vision of future security or relation. I hope we realise it before its too late in all cases and we are surrounded all over with a very hostile neighbourhood.

There was no other way than to help Bangaladesh. But the mute point is that whatever our gallant army achieved on the battlefield was lost as usual by our so called Politicians on the Negotiation tables.Had our Politicians(rather Politician as it was Indira Gandhi and the only Indira Gandhi was a sole politician others surrounding were mere eunuch)shown the wisdom to take advantage of the situation and settled all perrinial problems with Pakistan and the erstwhile East Pakistan(like sharing of water,Farakka Barrage etc.)and asking B'desh to take every citizen of theirs back,we would not have been in such pathetic situation today. skj
