I think that we have already insulted 'Vande Mataram' by not taking it as our national anthem during independence... it played a very important role during the freedom struggle and was ingored once we attained freedom...yes people will say that this is still a national song...but tell me one thing what do you sing during 15th aug/26th jan/any flag hoisting ceremonies...the national anthem and not the national song..so it doesn't matter now. we have already sidetracked 'Vande Mataram' and its importance a longggg time ago. we made a compromise at that time ( for whatever reasons) and we still continue to make compromises in each and every matter since our independence

Agreed. But again if "Sara Jahan se...." is incorporated as national anthem, ultimately it requires agreement by all. Somebody else, say a Christian will object. He will propose an English song!! So a compromise will always be required, my dear brother. Or else a national anthem with all national languages including English may be proposed - sounds ridiculous does it not!!!!!!!!!

Bodhisattwa, Please correct me if I am wrong. If I remember correctly, "Vande Mataram" WAS sung as National Anthem for some time, and then was replaced by "Jana Gana Mana" later on? And, the reason "Saare Jahaan Se Achha..." cannot replace "Vande Mataram" is because, one, it was not written to pay respect to the motherland, just a poem to praise it, whereas "Vande Mataram" pays respect to the motherland. Secondly, Iqbal decided to leave the country that he wrote "Saare Jahaan se achha..." Why would you leave the place that you call the best, and go settle for something less than the BEST. So, probably that made it not so popular also.
