IS NARMADA DAM JUSTIFIED?
by bhaumik on Apr 17, 2006 11:57 AM   Permalink

before blindly supporting the fast of medha patkar one needs to see stark reality in villages of gujarat. here water is scarsly avilable for most of the months in a year even when monsoon is normal. in regions of saurashtra, kutchh and northen areas of gujarat has been experiancing this situation since long time and with increase in population and development the demand is ever increasing. the ground water level is constantly decreasing.
the point here is there is no other big river in gujarat which can satiate the drench of gujarat. people opposing the construction always argues with one thing in mind that these dams can be replaced by small check dams but they need to understand that for check dams also you need water to check!
the situation in gujarat is so worsened that rajkot, the fourth largest city in gujarat, with a population of nearly 16 lacks is having water only on alternate days. jamnagar, a city of stratagic imporatance to country, with a population of 8 lacks is getting water every third day. and mind you i am not talking about industrial usage or irrigation water. what i am talking is only about drinking water. i believe this justifies the dam more than anythhing.
